U.S. Cell-Phone Tracking Clipped

Federal law enforcement attempts to use cell phones as tracking devices were rebuked twice this month by lower court judges, who say the government cannot get real time tracking information on citizens without showing probable cause.

Sanders Leads Bipartisan Coalition in Calling for the Protection of Civil Liberties in Patriot Act Reauthorization

Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT) today led a bipartisan coalition of 163 members in urging the conference committee for the Patriot Act reauthorization bill to adopt Senate provisions that protect the privacy of Americans' reading records. The coalition released a letter today to the conference committee members who are preparing to meet to determine the final content of the Patriot Act reauthorization bill.

On October 26, 2001, President Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act into law. Four years later, Congress is on the verge of reauthorizing all of the provisions scheduled to sunset, and plans to make only minor changes (see more information on our legislation page).

Now is the time to renew our opposition to the PATRIOT Act and other post-9/11 laws and policies that infringe on rights and liberties.

Study: DC red-light cameras cause accidents

A Washington Post analysis of crash statistics shows that the number of accidents has gone up at intersections with the cameras. The increase is the same or worse than at traffic signals without the devices.

FBI Admits Mistakes in Security Wiretaps

<!--StartFragment -->The FBI says it sometimes gets the wrong number when it intercepts conversations in terrorism investigations, an admission critics say underscores a need to revise wiretap provisions in the Patriot Act.

The FBI would not say how often these mistakes happen. And, though any incriminating evidence mistakenly collected is not legally admissible in a criminal case, there is no way of knowing whether it is used to begin an investigation.
