Judge refuses to gag Kansas doctor's defense

WICHITA | A federal judge on Thursday denied the government's efforts to gag defense attorneys, family and supporters of a Kansas doctor accused of unlawfully prescribing medication.

SEATTLE -- A pain treatment advocacy group filed suit Wednesday in federal court to challenge the restrictions Washington state officials have put on prescription pain medication.

The nonprofit Pain Relief Network says the guidelines for prescribing narcotics, written by the Washington state Department of Health and published in March 2007, have influenced pain treatment across the country and have made doctors afraid to give opiate prescriptions.

Other critics are lambasting federal agencies for not having done enough to stop Speaker. Stop him from what? Getting on a plane when he had broken no law? Do we really want the government to be able to detain someone simply because he may have a disease that is serious but is not a threat to others? Should a citizen's own government be allowed to turn him away at the border as he seeks to re-enter his country, just because someone decided to place him on an advisory "watch list"? I think not.
