The Liberty Coalition, a trans-partisan public policy group dedicated to supporting and protecting civil liberties and human rights, today praised FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds for her continued commitment to fight for enhanced national security.
Mr. Tice intends to report to Congress probable unlawful and unconstitutional acts conducted while he was an intelligence officer with the National Security Agency (NSA) and with the Defense Intelligence Agency. These acts involved the Director of the National Security Agency, the Deputies Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations, and the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and were conducted via very highly sensitive intelligence programs and operations known as Special Access Programs (SAP).
Sibel Edmonds, Founder & Director of NSWBC, stated: “We applaud the call by Liberty Coalition & Al Gore for congress to enact new legislation that would provide meaningful whistleblower protections, especially for those patriots who report abuses of Executive Branch authority in the sensitive areas of national security. Hundreds of national security whistleblowers, patriotic government employees, have brought to the public’s attention cases of agency wrongdoing only to find themselves fired, stripped of their security clearance, and/or deprived of meaningful work, simply because they were courageous and patriotic enough to place the security of our nation above their own career security and interests."
By Sibel Edmonds (a.k.a. whistleblower)
Dear Mr. Goss, the timing of your recent op-ed in the New York Times interestingly coincides with the upcoming congressional hearing by the House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats & International Relations on National Security Whistleblowers. Your comments are predictably consistent with the pattern of “preemptive strikes” you and the administration have been keen on maintaining. I do not blame you for your opposition to legislation to protect courageous whistleblowers, which will enable the United States Congress to reclaim some of its authority and oversight that it has given up for the past five years. No sir, you have all the right and reason to be nervous. However, I must take issue with your attempt to mislead the American public - another habit of your heart - by presenting them with false information and misleading statements.
The Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan network dedicated to defending Americans’ liberties, applauds hearings on whistleblower protection to be held today before the House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations. Russell Tice (National Security Agency) and Professor William Weaver from the Liberty Coalition partner organization National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC) will be heard in the proceedings. Former members of the intelligence community will tell Congress about the retaliation they have experienced since they came forward to expose problems in their respective agencies.

The Foreign Agent Factor
In his farewell address in 1796, George Washington warned that America must be constantly awake against “the insidious wiles of foreign influence…since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government.”
Today, foreign influence, that most baneful foe of our republican government, has its tentacles entrenched in almost all major decision making and policy producing bodies of the U.S. government machine. It does so not secretly, since its self-serving activities are advocated and legitimized by highly positioned parties that reap the benefits that come in the form of financial gain and positions of power.
“The real rulers in Washington are invisible and exercise power from behind the scenes.”- - Justice Felix Frankfurter
It used to be the three branches - congress, the executive, and the courts - that we considered the make-up of our nation’s federal government. And some would point to the press as a possible fourth branch, due to the virtue of its influence in shaping our policies. Today, more and more people have come to view corporate and foreign lobby firms, with their preponderant clout and enormous power, as the official fourth branch of our nation’s government. Not only do I agree with them, I would even take it a step further and give it a higher status it certainly deserves.
There is evidence of foreign intelligence backing for the 9/11 hijackers. Why is the US government so keen to cover it up?
I respectfully contend, based on an incontestable basis in law and fact, that neglect of duty and/or malfeasance in office on the part of the aforementioned individuals, places America at increased and unnecessary risk of a nuclear 9/11 or other catastrophic terrorist attack(s).
Like so many other disillusioned ex-CIA, FBI and other erstwhile spooks, Haig Melkessetian’s career was derailed for telling the truth.
The Liberty Coalition has a working group to protect government whistleblowers who report waste, fraud and abuse from retaliation. Therefore, it has a keen interest in the victims’ recovery of make whole remedies. It participates here to prevent the chilling effect taxation of such remedies would have on whistleblowing.
In a historic ruling against the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a federal court jury unanimously held that the FBI illegally retaliated against Jane Turner, a 25-year veteran FBI agent.
The state secrets privilege is ripe for a hearing. The NSA surveillance cases, extraordinary rendition cases of Maher Arar and Khalid el-Masri, the recent assertion of the privilege by the New York Times in a defamation case, and numerous other uses of the privilege have constantly been in the news for the last couple of years. But I want to explain why the Committee on Government Reform should hold the hearing and the reasons that focusing on Sibel’s case is the best way to open up this issue.
State Secrets Privilege Was Used to Cover Up Corruption and Silence Whistleblowers
“The failure to address Special Agents Graham’s complaint points to a major failure of oversight,” said Liberty Coalition National Director Michael Ostrolenk. “Our Nation’s security demands that allegations like this do not slip through the cracks, or worse, fall victim to cover up.”
“Mrs. Edmonds is not a national security threat but a national hero and the American public deserves to hear the truth of her case. Congress must act and act now by having public hearings. Without them, the cover-ups and criminal activities will just continue.” Said Michael Ostrolenk, National Director of the Liberty Coalition.
It has been almost five years now since former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds first contacted the Senate Judiciary Committee to reveal the shocking tale of Turkish bribery of high-level U.S. officials.
This legislation will give Federal employees the Freedom to Tell the Truth when they bring concerns of waste, fraud, abuse, and other misconduct to the attention of their supervisors.

Many civilian federal employees, in a variety of agencies, are on the front lines of the war on terrorism. But who protects them from workplace retribution when they put their sworn duty to defend and protect the public’s health and safety ahead of their self-interest or the interests of their supervisors and agencies?
Over 50 public interest groups, and whistleblowers from across the United States, are planning the first-ever “Whistleblower Week in Washington (WWW),” scheduled for May 13-19, 2007 in Washington DC. Scheduled events will include press conferences on major whistleblower issues, seminars and panels attended by leading whistleblowers and Congressional-related events. Most events will be open to the press.
Concerns about the effect of mental health care treatment on security
clearances, as reported in USA Today by former DG Pearson, are real. CFSOs
has seen numerous cases where even allegations of mental health issues,
ranging from PTSD to depression to marital discord to stress-related
substance abuse have been referred by M/MED to Diplomatic Security (DS),
usually resulting in recommendations to revoke a clearance.

This is an issue that should transcend partisan interests. It does not matter which party is in power. Power itself needs to be checked and one of the ways to do that is to protect those brave men and women who come forward to blow the whistle on waste, fraud and abuse.
FBI language specialist Sibel Edmonds was fired from her job with the FBI’s Washington Field Office in March 2002. Her crime was reporting security breaches, cover-ups, blocking of intelligence, and the bribery of U.S. individuals including high-ranking officials.
In the crowd was Michael German, a 16-year agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation who resigned in June 2004, after two years of what he describes as retaliation for his complaints about the mishandling of a terrorism investigation. He enjoyed a degree of vindication after Mr. Grassley earlier this year obtained transcripts appearing to uphold Mr. German’s account of the case.
FBI language specialist Sibel Edmonds was fired from her job with the FBI’s Washington Field Office in March 2002. Her crime was reporting security breaches, cover-ups, blocking of intelligence, and the bribery of U.S. individuals including high-ranking officials. The State Secret Privilege has often been invoked to block court proceedings on her case, and the U.S. Congress has even been gagged to prevent further discussion.
This morning, Annie Jacobsen appeared on Fox & Friends and was interviewed regarding her experience on Northwest Flight 327. The interview was followed by a TSA spokeswoman attempting to carry out political damage control, and she tried unsuccessfully to discredit the current and former Federal Air Marshals who publicly came forward to expose agency management incompetence and inaction.
Last week, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs voted to approve S.274 and send it to the Senate floor for debate. S.274 is the Senate equivalent to the House bill H.R. 985. This legislation, if passed, would constitute an important and hard fought victory for Federal employees.
